SOCIAL REPORT

As a part of its continued commitment to social development, your Company has been contributing towards social causes and society through Deepak Medical Foundation (DMF) and Deepak Charitable Trust (DCT). DMF and DCT are run with the support of Deepak Fertilisers And Petrochemicals Corporation Limited and Deepak Nitrite Limited.

The aim of DMF is to provide preventive and curative services on an out-patient and in-patient basis while that of DCT is to improve the quality of life of the People through developmental activities.

DMF runs a hospital at Nandesari (Dist. Baroda, Gujarat) offering medical aid to out-patient, in-patient, diagnostic, referral and emergency services. Recently, an ultrasound equipment has been installed in the Hospital at Nandesari for diagnostic support to OBGYN work.

DCT and DMF reach out to over 27 villages around Nandesari, covering approximately 60,000 people. Besides, DMF runs a clinic at Taloja in Chindran village (Dist. Raigad, Maharashtra), which apart from offering out-patient and emergency services, also provides clinical services in pediatrics, obstetrics, gynaecology, leprosy, immunization etc. DCT and DMF together comprise a team of 200 persons, predominantly female.

DCT's main activities during the year centered around:

(i) Reproductive and child health under which ante-natal care clinics were run in 13 villages around Nandesari to tackle reproductive health problems.

(ii) `Pati Sampark' through which husbands of pregnant women was contacted and educated about pregnancy and childbirth.

(iii) 40 Anganwadis, which are run as a part of the government's Integrated Child Development Scheme.

(iv) In respect of sexual health, persons suffering from Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) were identified and two STI clinics were held every week at the village level for women and a clinic for men. DCT has conducted a campaign in eight factories for spreading awareness among workers about STI/HIV/AIDS.

(v) Widows who lack earning opportunities were encouraged to join the women's dairy co-operatives and savings groups.

(vi) Since some years, thrust on adolescent development is being given and 810 adolescents have been trained in livelihood skills like tailoring, repairing home appliances and motor rewinding, apart from counselling on reproductive health and gender issues. At Taloja, tailoring classes were conducted for adolescent girls who had dropped out of school.

(vii) As a part of improving economic and social conditions / status of women, `sangathans' were organized in 12 villages. Five groups of men called `sahakar samities' were formed to recognise the need for supporting women.

(viii) To increase female income and enhance economic status, women from 7 villages have been organised in 7 dairy co-operatives with 990 members, the turnover of which has crossed rupees one crore with a profit ranging from 4% to 10%, and;

(ix) As a part of inculcating saving habits, `bachat mandals' or self-help groups have been formed whose members save every month and lend among themselves to those members who need loans. These groups also availed loans from commercial banks under the NABARD Self Help Group Linkage Scheme. At Nandesari, there are 146 self-help groups with a membership of 2,646 persons.

As a feather in its cap, DCT has been conferred with the "Environment Agriculture and Rural Development Award" by the Indian Merchants' Chamber Diamond Jubilee Endowment Trust in recognition of its contribution made in the field of rural development.
